d-Norgestrel Combined with Ethinyl Estradiol as an Oral Contraceptive

Abstract
A new oral antifertility agent d-norgestrel 0. 25mg., combined with ethinyl estradiol 0.05mg. -was administered to 209 sexually active and fertile women of childbearing age, who had seeked contraceptive advice at the. Family Planning Clinic of Seoul National University Hospital.
The agent was administered from Day.5 to 25 of the - menstrual cycle and a total of 1, 082 cycles has been accumulated with 209 women. Individual cycles varied from 1 to 11 cycles. Continuation rates by the end of 3rd, 6th and 9th cycle were 74.2, 46.9 and 18.7 per cent respectively. Most of the side effects have developed within the first 3 cycles of use. These were mild and transitory in nature. Most frequently ,observed side effect was headache and it has been observed in 2.3 per cent of the total cycle. The incidence of nausea, vomiting and poor digestion, which Are most frequently observed with other antifertility agents, were quite low and rated 1. 4 and 0.9 per cent of the total cycle. There were no failures. The results demonstrated that, in comparison with those of previous investigations in which the standard norgestrel and ethinyl estradiol combination was used, the agent containing 0.25mg. of d-norgestrel is of equal contraceptive effect and the incidence of the commoner side reactions to oral contraceptives was markedly low. Particularly, the incidence of nausea and poor digestion, which are the embarrassing side effect with other oral contraceptives, were quite low with this agent.
